Homemade Garlic Butter Croutons

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • 2 cups bread, cut into ¾–1-inch cubes

  • 3 tbsp butter

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • 2–3 garlic cloves, minced

  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped

  • ½ tsp salt

  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven.
    Preheat your oven to 375°F.

  2. Cut the bread.
Cut the sourdough bread into ¾–1-inch cubes. Try to keep them around the same size so they cook evenly.

  3. Melt the butter.
Add the butter and olive oil to a large skillet over medium heat. Heat until the butter is completely melted and the mixture starts to gently bubble.

  4. Add the garlic and parsley.
Turn off the heat. Add the minced garlic and fresh parsley and stir together. Adding the garlic after turning off the heat helps prevent it from burning.

  5. Coat the bread.
Add the bread cubes directly to the skillet. Toss until all the pieces are evenly coated in the garlic butter mixture. Season with salt and black pepper.

  6. Bake.
Spread the bread cubes in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake for 12–18 minutes, tossing halfway through, until golden brown and crispy.

  7. Cool.
Let the croutons cool completely before serving. They will continue to crisp up as they cool.

Tips

  • Use older bread: Day-old sourdough works especially well because it absorbs the garlic butter without becoming too soft.

  • Watch them closely: The last few minutes make a big difference. Remove them when they are golden and crisp.

  • Make them extra garlicky: Add another clove of garlic if you love a stronger garlic flavor.

  • Storage: Once completely cooled, store the croutons in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
